Eye strain is a common problem which can be caused by excess computer use, watching TV or driving. This can cause our eyes to become dry, irritated and fatigued. Below are 5 tips which can help keep your eyes healthy and hydrated.
5 Tips for Healthy Eyes
1) Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
This may seem obvious, but many of us forget or don't drink enough water throughout the day. Our eyes are mostly composed of water and require water to stay hydrated, so give your eyes what they need.
2) Take frequent breaks from your computer or TV screen
By taking breaks you give the 6 tiny muscles in each eye a chance to stretch and relax. Focus on an object in the distance, about 20 feet away, and then focus on an object close by, about 2ft away. Think of it as yoga for your eyes 🙂
3) Eat foods high in Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Mezo-Zeaxanthin
These 3 antioxidants are part of the carotenoid family as well as part of the macula - the part of the eye responsible for sharp, detailed central vision. These antioxidants protect the retina and help filter out harmful blue light which can cause age-related eye diseases. All 3 antioxidants can be found in kale, spinach, parsley, egg yolk and lutein-fortified foods.
4) Reduce Glare
By using non-reflective interfaces on your computer and television, you can dramatically decrease the amount of strain on your eyes. Reading from paper or making sure your computer screen is at a 90 degree angle from any light source can also help reduce eye strain.
5) Annual Eye exams
Your eye health is of utmost importance, so it's important to book an appointment with your naturopathic doctor or eye care health professional annually. They can help with monitoring your eye health which can prevent age-related eye diseases.
